Steve Kovac began officiating football in 1985 in Seattle, WA with the Pacific NW Football Officials Association (PNFOA). In the first few years Steve would routinely work 100+ games per season and early on aspired to work college football. He served on the PNFOA board for many years and in 1998 and 1999 served as president. Along the way Steve also worked several High School Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Semi-Final and Final games.
In 1995 Steve was hired to work in the Northwest Intercollegiate Football Officials Association (NIFOA) as an Umpire and Referee. In 2004 he was hired to work in the Pac-10 Conference as a Line Judge. He has worked several post-season bowl games while working in the Pac-12. In the 2016 season he was assigned to work the national Semi-Final Fiesta Bowl between Ohio State (11-2) and Clemson (13-1) at University of Phoenix Stadium, in Glendale, AZ.
The Pac-12 grades all officials in the conference and provides the NCAA with crews for 4-6 bowl games per season. The top-rated officials are then selected to work on an All-Star crew for games like the National Championship and Semi-Final Games.
The PNFOA has an impressive track record for helping people get to top of the football officiating avocation. PNFOA members who went on to work in the Pac-8, Pac-10, and Pac-12 include: Bill Fette, Chuck Czubin, Dick Schnell, Charlie Moffett, Frank Fiddler, Gary Hirst, Charlie Gilmore, Harvey Lanman, Tom Sifferman, Jim Springer, Jack Sprenger, Mike Ritch, Jeff Sadorus, Cap Anderson, Craig Wrolstad, and Matt Dornan.
